Join Morfydd Owen’s biographer, Dr Rhian Davies, to explore the life and work of the Treforest composer through examples of her own music.

The presentation will include some of Morfydd’s best-known songs and piano pieces, performed by BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Finalist Jessica Robinson and accompanist Rhiannon Pritchard.
The ideal introduction to the Festival!

Dr Rhian Davies is a historian and curator who specializes in restoring neglected music to the repertoire. Her advocacy for Morfydd Owen has led to a radical reappraisal of the composer’s significance and inspired performances and broadcasts all over the world.
Rhian’s pioneering research has been recognized by Gorsedd Cymru, an Honorary Fellowship from Bangor University, and the John Edwards Memorial Award from the Welsh Music Guild for services to the nation’s music.

Welsh soprano Jessica Robinson, a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with distinction in MA Opera Performance, has performed across the UK and internationally. A Prince of Wales Scholar, she has sung at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Albert Hall, and with the CBSO on BBC Radio 3. Operatic roles include Countess (Marriage of Figaro), Despina (Così fan tutte), and appearances with Welsh National Opera and Grange Park Opera. In 2023, she made history as the first Welsh woman to reach the final of Cardiff Singer of the World in 27 years, winning her round.

Rhiannon is in demand as an accompanist across Wales and is an official accompanist for three of the country’s major music festivals: the National Eisteddfod, Llangollen International Eisteddfod and the Urdd Eisteddfod.
She has collaborated with many of Wales’ leading singers, including Sir Bryn Terfel, Gwyn Hughes Jones, Rebecca Evans and Elin Manahan Thomas. She currently works as a vocal coach and accompanist in the vocal department at RWCMD, and also teaches privately as a piano tutor.
